Following my request that greater support regarding buying new school uniforms be provided for those pupils moving from Cymmer Afan Comprehensive School to Ysgol Cwm Brombil in September, the local authority have confirmed that they will be providing additional funding to the school to help families with school uniform under similar criteria as used for all applications under the Welsh Government’s PDG access fund. I will be seeking further clarification as to what specific groups of pupils this covers for each school year. Eligible families for pupils currently entering year 7 in September are able to receive up to £200 for school uniform and equipment to help them transition to comprehensive school, and eligible families of pupils entering year 10 will be able to get up to £125 to help with the costs of additional uniform and equipment while transitioning into Key Stage 4.
Note:
Eligibility criteria:
Learners eligible for free school meals can apply for this grant if they are:
• entering reception class or year 3 in primary school
• entering year 7 or year 10 in secondary school
• aged 4, 7, 11 or 14 in special schools, special needs resource bases or pupil referral units
I very much welcome the Local Authorities decision on this and will provide an update when further clarification is sought.
