LOCAL POLITICIANS CALL FOR MORE DETAIL

Aberavon’s MP, Dr Hywel Francis, and AM, Mr David Rees, have called upon the local councillors to seek more detail before considering the findings of a report on the future development that will replace the Afan Lido. Their comments followed the release of the report from officers at Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council last Friday.

The report was produced following a consultation period and highlights the response to a 10,000 signature petition which supported the development of a sports and leisure complex that would meet the needs of local people.

Dr Hywel Francis MP said:

“We were delighted with the decision of the leadership of the council to give a 4 week consultation period to allow local people to submit their views on the proposals. That consultation has now ended and whilst we welcome the inclusion in the report of the removal of the enterprise units and the possibility of an 8 lane swimming pool we now hope that the authority will consider a further delay to allow sufficient time for the report to be fully analysed and further information to be provided if required.”

David Rees AM said:

“Local people have expressed their views passionately and it is important that the local authority take the necessary time to consider both these and the report. The report recognises some of the points raised but I believe that there are still some questions that need to be resolved and areas that need further clarification. I hope that sufficient time is allowed to do that. The development of a sports and leisure complex that meets the health and well-being needs of the local community is critical and we must get it right.”

The report still includes proposals for the transfer of the library facility at Morrison Road to the new complex, along with an IT suite, and no changes to the dry side of the complex. It does not reflect the future transfer of the Dalton Road community centre to NSA which will continue providing a community facility at that site.
