LOCAL AM SIGNS UP TO PLEDGE FOR NEGLECTED CHILDREN IN WALES

Aberavon AM, David Rees, has signed up to the Action For children pledge on Child neglect. The pledge follows a major review by Action for Children called ‘Child Neglect in 2011’. This review of child neglect looks into how good we are at identifying and helping children at risk of, and experiencing, neglect.

David Rees AM said:
‘I was delighted to be able to attend the launch of this report and sign up to the pledge. Prevalence studies suggest that up to 1 in 10 children are neglected in the UK; this adds up to 62,000 in Wales. Neglect corrodes childhoods, robbing the most vulnerable children of happiness, life chances and hope. I’d like to praise the work done by Action for Children in helping children in Aberavon and across Wales access their rights and fulfil their potential.’

The review recommends that a variety of legal duties be placed on Local Authorities, Health and other statutory partners to work together ensure to sufficient provision of sustainable, early intervention services to address neglect. Wales is the first country in the UK to make the UNCRC part of its domestic law through the Rights of Children and Young Persons Measure 2011.
