‘EARTH HOUR COMES TO ABERAVON’

Aberavon AM, David Rees, has joined forces with WWF Cymru to raise awareness of Earth Hour; a global event in which people around the world switch out their lights to show they care about the planet. This year millions of people across the globe will be turning out their lights for an hour at 8:30PM on Saturday 31st March.

David Rees AM said:

‘This event is about much more that saving an hour’s electricity. WWF earth hour is about encouraging people to come together to highlight what a wonderful world we all share and put the emphasis back on what we can all do to play a part in protecting it.’

‘As an Assembly, all parties have given their backing to cut our greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020.’

In Wales, famous landmarks, such as the Millennium Stadium, Caernarfon Castle and the National Library in Aberystwyth, are expected to plunge into darkness yet again, along with sites around the world from Big Ben to Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council will be turning off the lights in various buildings and encouraging, residents, staff and organisations to turn off their lights. You can find out more about what else is going on near you via WWF’s Earth Hour map at earthhour.wwf.org.uk/map.
WWF Cymru is also encouraging people to join in at home by turning out the lights and holding candlelit dinners. Welsh celebrity chef Bryn Williams has created special eco-friendly recipes and these can be found via the WWF Cymru website wwf.org.uk/wales.
