David Rees AM joins with Dr Hywel Francis MP to support the teaching profession

David Rees, AM for Aberavon, is today joining with Dr Hywel Francis, MP for Aberavon, in supporting the action of the National Union of Teachers (NUT). Following almost two years of discussions with the UK Government, NUT teachers across Wales and England have today taken industrial action to protest against the UK Government’s changes to teachers’ pay and pension plans.

Dr Francis said: ‘The excessive workload and bureaucracy forced on the teaching profession is unacceptable.  Teachers now work 55-60 hours per week which can only be detrimental to the education of children.  Added to this is the performance related pay scheme that Michael Gove is advocating which will not improve educational standards and outcomes.’

Dr Francis added: ‘It is wrong that this Coalition Government want teachers to pay more towards their pension, work longer and receive a smaller pension when they retire.  Most teachers will not be able to work successfully in the classroom to age 68 so they will have to retire earlier on substantially reduced pensions. Those teachers that do retire from the classroom at age 68 can expect less than a decade of good health in retirement.’

David Rees AM said: ‘I join with my colleague Dr Francis in supporting the teaching profession across Wales and England in fighting for fair pay and wage conditions, particularly regarding pension settlements. Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and it is vital that they are fairly supported in order for them to continue to educate our children to a high standard.’
