Aberavon AM, David Rees, has welcomed the news that Morrison Road Post Office in Sandfields will be receiving a grant of almost £20,000. The money will go towards creating new signage, ramp access, shutters, CCTV and a photocopier. The grants have been approved under the revised Post Office Diversification Fund which helps local post offices expand their businesses and provide new services for the community.
David Rees AM said:
“I would like to congratulate staff at Morrison Road Post Office on their successful application to the Post Office Diversification Fund. Post Offices are at the heart of our community and are often a lifeline for vulnerable people.”
“This money will help us to keep Post Offices open by ensuring that they are sustainable and viable businesses, and I am delighted that so many Post Offices in Wales have been able to take advantage of the fund.”
Carl Sargeant, Minister for Local Government and Communities said:
“The Welsh Government has made a commitment to continue to provide support for the post office network in Wales. Post offices provide a range of services to local communities, the loss of which could see those communities suffer social or financial exclusion.
“Following last summer’s evaluation of the scheme we have taken the recommendations of the independent report on board and revised the scheme accordingly as well as taking account of the lessons we have learned from running the scheme in the first three years.
“I am delighted that 48 post offices have benefitted from capital grants from this latest round of PODF with a further 10 post offices benefiting from revenue grants for business advice. I am sure the scheme will continue to provide much needed support to sub postmasters and postmistresses so that whilst maintaining their current business they can expand on the services they offer their local communities.”
Grants totalling £526,698.45 will be given to post offices across Wales. Since making the first awards in July 2009, funds totalling £4.4 million have been paid out to successful post offices across Wales and 287 post offices have completed the capital works funded.
