A PASSION FOR EDUCATION IN PORT TALBOT

Aberavon AM, David Rees, today attended the opening of Unit 11 which, alongside its predecessor Unit 10, will provide a training facility focused upon carpentry skills. The opening was especially poignant as the three crosses used in the production of Michael Sheen’s ‘Passion’ were designed and constructed by local students and Volunteers at the WEA workshop at Unit 10. The extended facility will help people gain valuable skills whilst building their confidence and self-esteem.

David Rees AM said:
‘I’m delighted to attend the opening of this facility which not only helps people gain skills to go onto employment, but also empowers people through learning. It was lovely to meet learners, volunteers and get an understanding of just how much this project has impacted on people’s lives; many whom had no qualifications and were struggling with very low self-esteem.’

Unit 10 and 11 are the offspring of the well know unit 19 which was established by NSA in partnership with WEA. The objective was to provide a workshop based training facility focussed on carpentry that would help people build their confidence. It would also provide an opportunity to gain work related experience, develop teamwork skills and progress into employment. The three crosses, used in the ‘Passion’, were made by a team of unpaid learners, led by volunteer Derek Edwards, using donated timber. The team worked with the producers to provide these props which were a crucial part of the finale of the play. Units 10 and 11 are situated in Addison Road, Sandfields, Port Talbot and anyone interested is welcome to go along to find out more.
