Whilst the focus over the last few months have been on the future of steel making at Port Talbot, the possible loss of a large number of jobs and the impact on the local economy, job losses announced in January have been taking place. In addition to the job losses experienced by contractors and agency staff employed at the Steel Works, local workers have also seen that many of the 750 direct job losses announced have taken place mainly through voluntary redundancy and early retirement schemes. However, the remainder of the 750 job losses are likely to take place by the end of this month with large numbers being lost through compulsory redundancy.
David Rees, Assembly Member for Aberavon, today asked the First Minister what the steel Task Force was doing to support these workers both for retraining and finding new jobs.
He said; “By the end of June we will see some steel workers being made redundant resulting in they and their families facing very difficult times ahead of them. The Task Force was established by the Welsh Government in January following the initial announcement of job losses and it is important that these workers receive the support needed to get back into employment quickly. Whilst we continue the fight to secure a future for our steel workers we must not forget those who are no longer employed within it.”
In January Tata Steel announced more than 1000 job losses across its UK sites, with 750 of those at Port Talbot and following that the workforce faced further uncertainty with the announcement by Tata Steel in March that they intended to sell their UK plants.
