“SOLAR BUDDIES” – AM BACKS SUN SAFETY CAMPAIGN

David Rees AM met with Welsh ‘mumtrepreneurs’, Laura Griffin and Kelli Aspland, at a special exhibition held at the Senedd on Tuesday 3rd March.

Their invention, known as ‘Solar Buddies’ was developed with support from Gareth Barham, Chief Tutor of Product Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University, who has worked with the Cwmbran pair over the past 18 months to develop and design the applicator.

Engineered to help children apply sun cream independently and thoroughly, Solar Buddies combine a roller ball and sponge applicator. The shape of the bottle is chunky and so easier for children to grip. Meanwhile, the roller ball help control the flow of the cream, while the sponge helps children to rub the lotion in.

Solar Buddies are preparing to run a pilot scheme in two schools in Torfaen and hope that the opportunity to demonstrate their product in the Assembly could eventually see the product piloted throughout Wales.

 Commenting David Rees said:

“It was great to meet Laura and Kelli. They’ve worked really hard to get their idea of the ground and ‘Solar Buddies’ could make a real difference when it comes to keeping our children safe in the sun.

“By identifying a problem, then working with Cardiff Metropolitan University to develop a solution, these two women have shown tremendous initiative – I wish them every success in the future.”
