Aberavon AM welcomes result of steel ballot.

The ‘Yes’ result from the ballot of steelworkers on proposals agreed between the Trade Unions and TATA has today provided a positive outlook from steelworkers for the future of Tata’s UK plants. The ballot result reflects the views of the membership of the 3 major steel unions at Tata – Community, Unite and the GMB – and follows an extensive programme of roadshows which steel workers were encouraged to attend.

David Rees AM said “This result shows that the workforce has prioritised a commitment to the steel industry here in Wales over personal gain. A similar commitment must now be reflected by Tata as they honour their pledges for investment which formed part of this proposal. Since January last year the trust of the workforce has been strained to breaking point and steel workers, through their decision today, have now given Tata an opportunity to rebuild that trust. I urge Tata to take that opportunity.”

“I have today asked the Welsh Government to reaffirm its commitment to supporting welsh steel making and to continue to work with Tata on investment projects that will allow steelmaking to become more sustainable and viable.”

“The future of steel making at Port Talbot is critical to the town and local businesses and the minimum 5 year guarantee offered through this proposal will remove the immediate uncertainty that many faced. We can now look forward with greater hope for a stronger steel industry and a stronger local economy.”

Mr Rees added “Throughout this process the steel unions have shown complete dedication to the long term interests of their members and they must be commended for the manner in which they have carried out that role as they faced a variety of attacks. I will continue to work with the trade unions as we move forward on implementing the agreement and creating a strong future for steelmaking in Wales.”
